Lagos, Nigeria (December 16, 2022) - A regional consultation focusing on genome editing is being held in the city of Lagos, Nigeria.
Genome editing scientists from various Ethiopian universities, agricultural research and other relevant institutions of the country are participating in the discussion organized by the African Union's New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).
The science of genetic engineering is believed to have significant contributions to Africa's industrial sector, biotechnology and agriculture, the development of medicines and vaccines as well as the cure of genetic diseases.
The major focus of the Lagos consultation is to foster a broader understanding of genome editing among different stakeholder groups through communication and advocacy for enhanced uptake of the tool to optimize agriculture in Africa.
African scientists drawn from six countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zambia and Eswatini are in attendance of NEPAD Geneme Editing Development support pilot program.
